The gardens were previously a Jewish cemetery. In the early 1930’s or so the cemetery was moved to Verano. Being respectful to the Jewish community , which had enabled the city to recreate the rose garden in a sacred place, the paths which divide the beds in the collection, are in the form of the menorah , the seven-branched candelabrum , a symbol of Judaism.
